| Things are getting exciting here at
Nemetschek North America. We're off to a great start in 2004 with
some great reviews in trade publications. Of course, we know that
VectorWorks continues to get better and better, but it's always
nice to see it in print! Desktop Engineering, Macworld,
Woodshop News, and Architosh are just a few
publications talking about VectorWorks this month. Check our website
in the coming weeks for links to the articles.
We had a great show in Las Vegas last month. VectorWorks had a
prominent booth at the National Association of Home Builders Show.
The demonstrations were always well attended, and every CAD consultant
we brought was busy on his feet the whole time. Next up for us
is the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT)
Show in Long Beach, California from March 18 - 20. If you'll be
in the area, stop by our booth. Drop an email to Kevin Linzey,
if you'd like a free show pass: klinzey@nemetschek.net
We'll also be heading down to Florida on March 26 and 27 to talk
with landscape architecture students at LABASH. This annual meeting
is a great opportunity to demonstrate CAD to future landscape
design professionals.
Even though our Fall Sony Monitor Giveaway is over, we still have
the final winner to share with you. December's winner- Gorny Garcia
Architects, of Danville, CA.- is featured in our Firm Profile
column.

PROFILE |
Gorny &
Garcia Architects, LLP
Danville, California |
Joseph
Gorny and Francis Garcia formed the partnership Gorny &
Garcia Architects, LLP in 1999. Their home office is located
in Danville, CA, east of San Francisco. Both partners had
success individually, but realized that they could build
a dynamic, successful firm if they joined forces. |
 |
The company specializes in residential architecture, from
entry level multi-family housing to high-end custom homes.
Although the custom home market forms the core of the company's
work, both partners strive to bring elements of custom home
design into their multi-unit projects. They also do smaller
scale commercial projects, such as wineries and golf course
clubhouses. They prefer commercial projects with a social
aspect which integrates well with their residential work. |
 |
The firm utilizes 3D design at all phases of the work, from
pre-design and design review presentations through interior
architecture and lighting. Mr. Gorny has been using Vectorworks
(Minicad) for 3D design since 1996 and is experimenting
with the use of 3D modelling to produce construction documents
and eliminate the traditional 2D drafting associated with
most architectural drawing. Most recently, he has been using
the new Apple post-production applications to produce high
quality architectural video productions for their clients.
|
 |
Mr. Garcia, with his background
in fine arts, brings his artistic eye to all phases of the
work. His dedication to the art of architectural drawing
keeps the firm comitted to producing high quality graphics,
whether hand drawn or computer generated. His careful attention
to light, shadow and surface texture helps to bring the
computer models to life.
In addition to outside drafting support, the company contracts with
designers such as Tiger Rose Designs in Mill Valley, CA, who provides
interior design services on key projects, and Rick Erickson of Port
Townsend, WA, who provides 3D modelling and computer graphics support. The company has also integrated
landscape architecture into their work by associating with
Martin Hoffman Landscape Architecture, also in Danville.
The partners feel that the flexibility provided by the use
of outside consultants helps them to tailor staffing to
meet clients needs and schedules. |
 |
This approach was particularly successful
on the recently completed Castlewood Country Club project.
The team approach helped them complete a complex project
with a competent staff which included consultants who specialize
in all phases of the work, including restaurant design and
interiors of hospitality projects.
Gorny & Garcia Architects strives to produce architecture
that is fun, timeless and permanent, not born of specific
styles. Whether doing modern or traditional design, they
try to create an architecture that is truly classic.

| How do
I export a VectorWorks' worksheet to Excel? |
With the Export Worksheet
command in VectorWorks, you can easily open Wall Take Offs, Window
and Door Schedules, or any other worksheet in Excel.
If a worksheet is already on the drawing, first the worksheet
will need to be open. (Figure
1a) To open a worksheet already on the drawing, go to the
Resource Browser and select the worksheet. Right-click (Win) or
Option-click (one button Mac mouse) on the desired worksheet and
select "Open". (Figure
1b) The worksheet should be open right on the screen. (Figure
1c)
To export the worksheet, go to File>Export>Export Worksheet. (Figure
1d)
An "Export Worksheet" dialog box will appear. Select "Tab" and
"All Rows". (Figure
1e) The "Tab" here means the file will be exported in a tab
delimited format. If a portion of the worksheet is highlighted
while going to File>Export>Export Worksheet, selecting "Selected
Rows" in the "Export Worksheet" dialog box will only export those
rows.
After clicking "OK" a "Save" dialog box appears. Enter the file
name and click "Save". (Figure
1f)
Now that the worksheet has been exported, it can be opened in
Excel or any other Tab delimited supported text program.
Open Excel. Go to File>Open and select the exported worksheet file. (Figure
1g)
A Text Import Wizard may appear. Select "delimited" and click
on Next. (Figure
1h)
Click "Next" at the second Import Wizard screen and then click
Finish. (Figure
1i)
The exported VectorWorks worksheet now appears as a sheet in Excel.

| How can
I render in VectorWorks and export the drawing as an image? |
| The Render Bitmap Tool
is an easy solution for your rendering-to-image needs. The Render
Bitmap tool renders based on Custom RenderWorks settings. Before
using the Render Bitmap tool, Custom RenderWorks settings should
be verified. To set Custom RenderWorks settings, go to View> Custom
RenderWorks settings.
To use the Render Bitmap tool, set your drawing with the desired
layer and class visibility settings and 3D view. Select the Render
Bitmap Tool from the Rendering palette. (Figure
2a) The selection arrow will turn into a crosshair. You are
going to marquee around the portion of the drawing you want to
render. To do this, click in one of the corners within your desired
rendering area and drag diagonally to the opposite corner. (Figures
2b and 2c)
The rendering will calculate and begin to render. When finished,
the selected item is the bitmap image. (Figure
2D) The bitmap can then be copied, moved, deleted, duplicated,
and resized. (Figure
